EBAY AUCTION HEADER The Ultimate Music Technology Experience ™ (760) 731-MIDI WEST COAST(212) 779-MIDI EAST COAST EMAIL: prosales.at.nightskysound.com SHOWROOM: by appointment only - Fallbrook, CA USA (actual photos) MODEL MBVO VOCODER Wow. Where do I start. Up for auction is a serious piece of electronic music history. Not only is this considered to be the Holy Grail of vocoders, but this particular one has a special history and amazing Hollywood legacy. This is currently owned by legendary film composer and sound designer Alan Howarth (Star Trek I, II, III, IV, Halloween, Poltergeist, Jurassic Park, etc.). This is the ACTUAL vocoder that was used in Star Trek, The Motion Picture, for the lightning and atmospheric effects of V'GER. This was also used by Alan Howarth on other Star Trek movies and many other blockbuster Hollywood movies that he did sound design for. This piece has an incredible legacy in Hollywood sound design history. The winner will also receive a Certificate of Authenticity signed by Alan, and pictures of him actually using this vocoder on these film sessions. This vocoder is in excellent cosmetic condition for something that is 30 years old. Alan is the SOLE owner. Any wear or patina is from his talented hands only. The vocoder works 100% perfectly, and will arrive that way. It has just been thoroughly tested and works perfectly. Due to its age, there will be no warranties, expressed or implied. It is sold AS IS. It will be guaranteed not to arrive DOA. Moog Vocoder highlights, from Vintage Synth explorer: In 1979 Moog released a vocoder of their own, although its design and architecture is almost identical to the Bode 7702 vocoder. It's a 16-band analog vocoder which separates a given synthesizer sound (carrier signal) into seperate frequncy bands ranging from 50 to 5080 cycles per second. It does not have any internal oscillators so it is designed to be used as a processor for external carrier and modulator wave sources. The modulator is typically a vocal or drum beat used to modulate the carrier/synth sound being processed. It has microphone and line inputs as well as 16 synthesizer inputs (1 for each frequency band) and 16 outputs. This 16 channel cross-matrix patching system is cumbersome, but useful during the modular synth era, allowing for full external patching between synth and vocoder sections. Other features include a high-frequency bypass, a short 6ms response time for capturing fast percussive sounds, sample-and-hold, and a global bypass switch to turn off the vocoding effect. Unfortunately there is no output mixer, MIDI or CV/Gate. It has been used by Saga, Yellow Magic Orchestra, Wendy Carlos, Moog Cookbook, Devo, and filmaker/composer John Carpenter.
